For the past six years, the St Michaels Art League has been sponsoring the banner program. All our members are encouraged to create a banner which will hang on the poles along Talbot Street. It's a fun project, it gives SMAL good visibility and it's great fun to see my artwork displayed on our main street from April through November each year.
The general theme of this program is "Celebrate St Michaels" - so anything goes, as long as it is locally related. For several of the years I have painted a cartoon-like crab figure who has done a variety of things: waved various flags, raised a mug of beer and encouraged people to eat oysters, hung lanterns in the trees (celebrating St Michaels 200th birthday - a local myth), and steered a boat.
An artist friend had named the crab "Mikey" - I guess because he's from St Michaels. Each year she asks me, "What is Mikey going to do this year?"
Well, if you have ever walked the streets of our small village in the summer, one of the things you will see is tourists (and locals) eating ice cream. There are now several shops to stop for such a treat. It's fun to see how happy people seem to be when they are licking a cone. How can you not smile?
So, here's 2016 Mikey...
Look for Mikey hanging on a pole in April! Watch out for dripping ice cream...
